Koloma wins approval to drill in Idaho, joining Kansas in push to unlock natural hydrogen
19 Sep 2025

Koloma, a leading natural hydrogen start-up, has secured approval from Idaho regulators to begin seismic surveys and prepare for the state's first hydrogen test wells, placing the region at the forefront of a new energy sector.
The company's entry follows a decision by Idaho's Department of Lands and Oil and Gas Conservation Commission to regulate natural hydrogen alongside traditional hydrocarbons. The move gives Koloma an early advantage and could draw other explorers to the state, where underground reserves are largely untested.
Koloma is combining advanced geological surveys with early cooperation from regulators and local contractors to reduce risk and accelerate progress. If drilling confirms meaningful reserves, Idaho could shift from an exploratory site into a hub for US hydrogen development.
The sector is attracting growing competition. HyTerra, backed by Fortescue Future Industries, has reported encouraging results from wells in Kansas, while other companies are expanding exploration programmes in the Midwest. Analysts say that the outcome of Koloma's work in Idaho will help determine whether natural hydrogen moves beyond pilot projects.
"The race is accelerating," said one industry analyst. "What unfolds in Idaho will decide whether natural hydrogen remains a niche experiment or becomes a national game-changer."
Risks remain significant. Subsurface hydrogen systems are poorly understood, early wells may disappoint, and a shortage of specialised contractors could delay projects. The lack of federal rules adds further uncertainty to investment decisions.
Still, early momentum has placed Koloma in a strong position. By forging close ties with regulators and securing drilling partnerships, the group has created a framework for advancing projects quickly. Idaho's first test wells, expected in the coming months, will not only reveal the state's resource potential but also provide a benchmark for the wider US hydrogen industry.
